In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Johnston's sister Marjory has curated an extensive collection of his drawings for a show at Redbud Arts Center that will illustrate exactly how his illnesses and medication manifested in his work, from recurring characters representing good and evil to lines that grew more shaky depending on what drugs he was prescribed. Redbud Arts Centerīeloved outsider artist and Texan Daniel Johnston died in 2019 after a lifelong battle with mental illness, much of which was reflected in his art and music. The works on display at Redbud Arts Center will show the changes in Johnston's style as he battle with mental illness.
